IELTS Vocabulary: Speaking Part 2

IELTS Tips

  • Don't memorise long answers.
Anything you say that the examiner thinks has been memorised will not be assessed.
  • Use your imagination in your answers.
Remember that the examiner is testing your ability to speak English, not your views or general knowledge.
  • Use varied and advanced vocabulary.
You must show that you have enough vocabulary to discuss non-personal topics. The examiner will be checking to see if you can use complex sentences. You will get credit for your attempts, even if you make mistakes.
  • You can stall, but not for long.
If you cannot think of an answer to an examiner's question right away, you can say some 'filler' phrases to acknowledge the question and to show the examiner that are thinking about your answer. However, avoid waiting too long before you speak. This will cause the examiner to give you lower marks for fluency.

Here are some phrases you can use to fill in the spaces when you need more time:
    • That's a good question!
    • OK, well, let me see.
    • I've never thought of this before...
    • Hmm, let me think...
  • Make your voice heard.
You should speak loudly enough for the examiner to hear you and for the tape-recorder to capture what you are saying. Also, make sure to pronounce your words as clearly and correctly as possible.

Take one minute to prepare a talk on the following subject.

Take notes if you like and remember to include reasons and examples.

You should then speak for between one and two minutes.

Describe your favourite sport.

You should say:

  • what the sport is
  • how often you play or watch it
  • who you play or watch it with

and explain why it is your favourite sport.

Complete the answer by filling the gaps with a verb from the box below.

I love sport and I spend a lot of time playing or watching it. I swimming regularly, I out in the gym twice a week and I also a martial art called aikido. But I think my favourite sport is football, although I don't actually it any more. I was in the football team at school but I had to it up because I injured my back quite badly. However, I watch it all the time, either on TV or I go to matches. I my local team and I try to watch them play whenever I can. Of course, it's much easier to do that when they are playing at home but sometimes I the effort to travel to an away match too. I usually go to matches with my cousin who is a big fan too. We both get very upset when the team , but at the moment they are doing really well - last week they a much stronger team when they managed to three goals in the last ten minutes. It was very exciting - that's why I love football.
